Behind the Pumping Curtain

The Musing Mama

A recent New York Times article celebrates the fact that the IRS has finally decided to give nursing mothers (read working mothers) a tax break on pumps and breastfeeding supplies purchased in 2010. The ruling is too little too late for me, but it makes me reflect on what it means to succeed as a working, nursing mother. It sure takes a lot more than a tax break.

The schizophrenia that accompanies the role of working mom hits me hardest when I pump at the office. Bare chested and attached to a machine instead of my four-month-old infant, I feel a new mixed emotion trickle out of my body with each squirt of breast milk.
