With its emphasis on family values, Kwanzaa is the perfect time to get together with your kids to make your own decorations. When you create Kwanzaa decorations as a family, you are making more than just ornaments and symbols of the holiday. You are also making priceless memories.
One simple decoration you and your children can make is a family wall hanging. Cut out a piece of green scrapbook paper that measures four inches by 12 inches. Then, repeat this step with red and black scrapbook papers. Glue the three pieces side by side onto a 12 inch square of cardboard or mat board. Then, add color copies of your favorite family photos and a few decorative items, such as stickers and beads, to your Kwanzaa colored background. To finish the project, hot glue a strip of Kente cloth that has been folded to form a loop to the back of your artwork to create a simple hanger.
Another fun idea is to let the kids recycle toilet paper tubes into a Kinara decoration. This candle holder has spaces for seven candles and is a big part of the holiday. Cover a cardboard base with decorative paper or use poster paints to make it colorful. Cover three toilet paper tubes with bright green paper, another three with red paper and a final tube with black paper. Adhere three green tubes on the left side of your base and adhere the three red tubes on the other side. Place the black tube in the middle. Cut flame shapes from yellow or red tissue paper and glue them to the toilet paper tube candles.
