Anyone who has a staircase with a banister has a beautiful built in display area that is perfect for Christmas decoration ideas. While you can simply opt to loop some lovely pine needle roping over the banister, there are quite a few other options for dressing up your staircase.
You may want to consider substituting some less traditional garland options, such as ball trim or a colorful Christmas banner, for the standard Evergreen roping. If you do use roping, freshen up this idea by hooking evenly spaced ornaments or tassels onto your decoration after it is in place.
Another option for decorating a staircase is to temporarily adhere holiday cutouts to the risers. If you have a lot of young children, consider whimsical designs like elves and sleighs. You may even want to try creating scenes of Santa’s workshop or the Nativity on the stairs. For a less youthful look, try poinsettia or dove cutouts. If this idea doesn't quite seem sophisticated enough for your Victorian or cottage style home, try adding a border of paper lace to each riser right under the step tread instead. For a home with a more modern decorating style, consider adding polka dots in Christmas colors to the risers.
