To My 3-Year-Old
Today, I intended to write your birth story in honor of your 3rd birthday. I planned to lead with a description of how your Grammy used to tell me about the day I was born every year on my birthday—the hot weather, the morning grocery shopping with contractions, the fact that my dad was mowing the lawn just before they went to the hospital. I used to love to hear her recount the ho-hum tasks she performed that day, even though I had heard the story many times before.
So I was going to tell you all about the day that you were born. But now, in this writing moment, I have changed my mind. I am going to capture a little piece of you at age 3 instead—a celebration of the boy who has emerged since the day you entered the world.
