Adoption Is Not an Event...
You're My Second Mama, Aren't You?
But Rather a Lifelong Experience.
Thank you, Sharon Kaplan Roszia, adoption expert and author, for the title to this blog. Sharon is the first person I talked to about adoption and her wisdom and advice stood me in good stead many times.
People are always surprised that my children had deep and profound feelings about their relinquishment because they all arrived so young at five months old. I don’t know exactly how or when they were relinquished; I just know they were well cared for by the Holt International Adoption Agency.
I was not surprised because I had discussed this with Sharon and I read as much as I possibly could about the grief that adoptees feel. I can understand that it is hard for people to comprehend how an adopted child can grieve for someone they never knew, but if you think deeply about it, it makes sense.
