Most moms worry if their baby is developing normally. Rather than just worry, you can take a proactive role in positively impacting your baby’s development. Even before your baby can communicate with you with words, you can communicate with her. When she makes baby sounds and gurgles, respond with real words, not just baby talk and you will be facilitating her picking up verbal language more quickly. You don’t need to read to her from your college Psych texts, just use simple, everyday words when you speak to her. If you go out for a walk, point out birds and flowers, identifying them as you see them. At the store, say the names of the oranges, apples and bananas as you put them in your cart. Even if it feels like you are talking to yourself, your baby is receiving these verbal cues and processing them linguistically, which will lay the framework for when she starts talking.
